Two black labradors are being used by Malaysian authorities in the fight against pirate DVDs. Lucky and Flo are believed to be the first dogs who can sniff out the chemicals used to make optical discs. Though they cannot tell the difference between real and fake discs, they can discover discs labelled as other merchandise, and can examine freight much more quickly than their human colleagues. The dogs were trained in Northern Ireland by a handler who normally trains bomb-sniffer dogs; the US$17,000 training was paid for by the Motion Picture Association of America, which represents six major Hollywood studios.
