NHS computers rely on parts from eBay

The obsolete NHS computer system is being propped up by eBay purchases, says a report in the British Medical Journal. One senior trust manager reported getting computer parts shipped from the US, while another said “it’s been urgent that it’s replaced all the time I’ve been here, which is about three and a half years”.

Delays in implementing the new £20billion IT system are putting patients lives at risk, say experts. The new system is supposed to offer a centralised repository of all patient data, and to allow resource-sharing throughout the NHS, but insiders have condemned it saying that the project “isn’t working and isn’t going to work”.
