eBay have said today that they will ban cross-border ivory sales. Sellers attempting to list ivory products on the site will also be notified that they may be required to prove that they are legally allowed to sell ivory goods, said eBay spokesperson Nichola Sharpe.
The ban comes in response to a survery by the International Fund for Animal Welfare, which suggested that in a typical week, 2000 illegal ivory items were listed on eBay’s sites.
Though the move is intended to give “confidence to those people who want to buy legitimate and legal ivory items,” the charity don’t believe it goes far enough: spokesman Peter Prueschel said “sooner or later they will have to ban ivory entirely.”
