I suppose it was inevitable: copies of the final installment of the Harry Potter saga are available on eBay to buy today more than 24 hours before the official launch. As of the time of writing, the seller doesn’t appear to have sold any of his copies of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”: he claims to have ten in hand, and nine are listed on eBay: he’s keeping the last for himself.
Of course, one might wonder why anyone would pay fifty quid for a book that comes out tomorrow anyway: even if you pay for Special Delivery now, it’s not going to get to you before Saturday’s midnight release. And for those who are truly impatient, a pdf of (allegedly) the entire American edition is fairly easily findable on the internet anyway.

Anyway, bugger the book. I’m simply basking in the warm glow of seeing the word “embiggen” given it’s rightful stature. 🙂

*wonders how UK person got hold of so many US editions, though, and also notes that the shot that purports to be of the actual book, is taken from the pdf that’s going around, so does NOT prove this book is in the seller’s possession*

Oh, really? I read the first page and decided I’d actually rather wait for the real book. Whatever Bondy says 😀
So even more likely that what’s being sold in those auctions isn’t the real thing then.
I don’t think it is a fake, Sam – the first few pages and the last few pages are definitely right.
I can’t vouch for my initial source (some random bloke I overheard in the centre of Swansea) but I think there were different versions floating around. The one I glanced at had a completely different opening & read as though it had been written by a lovesick teenager.
I also saw an article saying that some pages of the pdf version were totally unreadable unless you edited them in Photoshop first!
