One of the most anticipated eBay auctions for a long time finally opened last night. A dress worn by Princess Diana to the Cannes Film Festival in 1987 and the opening of Miss Saigon in 1989 is being sold in aid of the America’s Promise Alliance. Bidding on the dress opens at US$125,000: at time of writing, it’s yet to get a bid, but there are more than nine days left to go, so go arrange that overdraft!
The dress was designed by Catherine Walker, taking its inspiration from the style of Grace Kelly. In June 1997, just a month before Diana’s death, it was purchased by WE tv, the women’s television network. Now it’s being sold in aid of the charity founded by General Colin Powell, dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged children and youth — an issue that was close to Diana’s heart.
