We’ve talked in the forum about Facebook, the social networking site. Though plenty of people are talking about Facebook as a tool for business, before I joined, I couldn’t see the point: now I’ve joined, I still don’t see the actual point, but I do see how addictive Facebook can be. Inevitably, then, there’s a TameBay group, which you are cordially invited to join.

Curiousity got the better of me. I took the plunge and set up an account, https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=563033128 (you need a free facebook account to access). It’s all very nice but commercially I’m not sure where it leads. Yes, I’ve put some blog and ebay auction links there but in such a closed ‘invited friends only’ community who can see them beyond those who’d be looking anyway ?
It’s also a tremendous soak on time. Some fun but also a great deal of dross….
To their credit Facebook seem to have a genuine spam free ‘social network’ site. It’s about contact; family, work colleagues, uni and school friends in an environment in which you have some control over what you encounter. If you want a place to meet with family or workmates then it seems rather good.
There is an added applications layer which is being used to provide income/visibility for a small number of companies and this seems to be the area to watch. eBay have a nice application that will display your auction/shop items (only suitable for US$ items at the moment). Some companies have developed applications that showcase their products and offer links to purchase.
For me It’s watch and wait…

I think eBay sellers are perhaps in a fortunate position in that we don’t necessarily have such a huge divide between “work” and “social” as some other people. I’m very glad I don’t work in an office any more and so can avoid the dilemma of what to do when your boss wants to friend you.
Facebook still feels like a young site, there are loads of improvements that would make it more attractive.
1) There are no applications for groups in the way that there are for individual profiles.
2) There is no realistic way to make contact with people unless you already know their email address (This is good, but for instance that long lost friend – how do you locate them if they no longer have that old hotmail account?)
3) Searching for anything is difficult as nothing is tagged, not individuals, not groups, not events, nada! That means if anyone has mentioned your search word in a group or profile it’ll come up as a spurious search result.
There’s loads more I don’t like about Facebook, but that’s my top three gripes at the moment. Maybe in another year or so it’ll be better though 😀
Well, I stuck in my granddaughter’s name in the search box (she is always on some social networking group or another) and up she popped, so I invited her as a friend (she’s on holiday so I’ll have to wait to see if it works). I didn’t have to know her email addy, just her name….
