TameBay gets a new look

No primary category set

If you’re a regular visitor to TameBay you’ve probably noticed the site has just changed as our sparkly new design went live at a minute past midnight today!

We’ve listened to loads of our regular readers and what they want from the site and how they use it so you’ll notice things like featured posts which keep top stories on the front page for longer. The page is a lot shorter but you’ll still find the latest news stories in the center column, and there’s more space on the side to display you, our readers comments.

The navigation bars at the top will help you find the topics you’re interested in and of course the link to the TameBay forum.

As most of you know Sue and I jointly run TameBay, but what you may not know is that it’s Sue who does all of the techie stuff behind the scenes. It’s taken her many many hours of work to create the new site and the result speaks for itself.

Many thanks to all the readers who have let us know what you wanted from the site, but most of all a huge personal thanks from me to Sue, as she’s the one that has designed and built our fantastic new site.

  1. Like number 4, I can’t see who made the reponse posts either.

I tried putting Tamebay into my “trusted sites” and that did not help.

    Kind Regards, Kevin

  2. What time did you think it was when you posted then Whirly?….. 😉 ..

Right off to the grindstone…Laters all

Oh and i miss the PS board too!).. 😛

  3. Like the new look but can you make it so that the comments section shows who made the post?

I agree about this point – I find it very difficult now to follow the threads within the comments, and see who is referring to what… name and shame them I say!

But the front page looks very business like! Well done Sue!

  4. blimey that was quick Sue – names now on the front page, just need them in the thread and we are away…

or (just seen comment about names on front page – think it was North, but there are no names over here where I am now so I don’t know……) were they always there and I didn’t notice before? I am lost now….

  5. I’m sorry, I’m not quite sure what people are asking for here.

Are you not seeing the names of who has written comments on the comment threads? If so… I need a screen shot people because they are there and I can see them perfectly well in the dozen or so browsers I have tested them in. 😕

Or are you asking for the name of the post author (i.e. Chris, myself, Dan, etc.) to be put on the front page?

I don’t understand Lynne’s comments because at 7.58 and 8.06 I was still asleep so nothing was changed 😆

  6. Having said all that – for the comment that I JUST made, my name is appearing….. strange…

Still doesn’t show for the other comments on this same post.

  7. Very nice stylish design, like the colours. Is there a preview of the comments box or is it no longer needed? I always make mistakes using HTML.

Like others I am not seeing the author. It is the same whether I use Firefox or Internet Explorer. Not sure whether relevant but I use Vista.

  8. Sorry, I’ve disabled the ability to preview/edit your comments while I try and sort out why comment authors’ names are not showing up.

  9. Okay, that should be showing peoples’ names now? It still needs a bit of tweaking (e.g. editing isn’t back yet) but I’m going to have coffee before I do anything else :-p

  10. Thanks Sue!

you didn’t understand my comments btw because I had my a**e and my elbow all muddled up again… I had got confused about the page that the comments were on (new design can muddle a little brain, ya know)

So new request – facility to completely delete any comment we look back on and feel acutely embarrassed about…

p.s. no smileys on the comments box now – deliberate “until after coffee” stuff, or a wee glitch?

  11. Smilies were also disabled while I fixed – basically, remove all superfluous “stuff” and then you should be able to see the problem more easily.

    Will be back shortly.

  12. But no, there will never be the facility to completely delete a comment that you have changed your mind about. Sorry 😆

  13. Well, one thing has come out of it for me. I’ve been an a avid fan of tamebay since S&M launched it. I’ve never subscribed (ashamed of my low sales on ebay 🙂 ). This morning feeling Sue’s pain. I was sorting out a screen grab to send her when I found I couldn’t upload it directly through the comments box. I thought I would subscribe and post it through the forum. By the time I managed to subscribe Sue had fixed the problem and I didn’t need to send.

This has got me thinking that Sue could have hit on an interesting marketing technique 🙂

  14. Hi Sue – still no smileys… wonder why… I am on Firefox btw.

No comment delete? Oh well everyone can carry on laughing at my idiocy I guess … LOL

  15. Well I was one of those that registered their opposition to changing the old layout because I hate those sites where you can’t find anything and can never know if you’ve seen everything…

But I’ve got to hand it to you Sue, The new design and layout comes across as very professional but maybe more important the usability is IMHO superb.

I love the fact that the central column is similar to the old view but with a much improved compact look.

The left column containg the curent featured article as well as tabs for popular regular topics is brilliant and a great improvement.

Last but not least the navigability is excellent.

I’m sure you burnt the candle at both ends to get this done but at the end of the day it was worth it.

    Congratulations on your new look,
    Ed

  16. Thanks Ed 🙂

Re. “registering your opposition” – you and the other people who wanted things left as they were, were incredibly helpful, actually, because you made it very easy to see which aspects of the old design were important to keep. We did want to make it easier for people to find what they were interested in, and at the same time be able to find just what was new. I think Revolution’s amazing theme has achieved that for us.

  17. I’m sorry, I’m not quite sure what people are asking for here.

    The world, duh!

    And yesterday.

    😀

  18. To reinterate others, it does look very professional and stylish. I prefer the old one personally, but I think that will change as I get used to this one.

I have one or two suggestions, the comments seem to be very spaced out needing lots of scrolling, and personally I would like a bit more colour injected into it. They are but minor piffly things.

    So well done!

  19. Just one little gripe, whatever I choose in “view – text size” I can’t make the text any larger 🙁
I’ve got a nasty problem with my right eye and it’s really difficult for me to read “normal” size text so I have websites and emails set to “larger” so that I’m not struggling to read with my nose almost pressed against the screen – is there anything you can do so that the text size can be made larger for people like me with eyesight problems?

    Thanks

  20. Kate, that’s not a “little” gripe, that’s a great big gripe and I’m really embarrassed I didn’t notice the fixed size types. I’ve made it responsive to browser changes now, so hopefully that will fix it. If not, can you let me know.

  21. Just a small feature request 🙂

I’d like there to be a list of the latest posts in the forum displayed on the main page, as there was on the previous page design.

  22. Another feature request – I was looking for Dan’s tips posts that were separated out, and thought I had found them in the archives, but get a 404 error page instead.

Could we have them as a category please Sue?

  23. Sorry Max, forum links have been sacrified in favour of more comments. If you want to see what’s new, there is a “new posts” link right at the top of the forum to take you there.

  24. I preferred the old one, but this is more businessy. Hadn’t visited for a day or so due to storm blowing the router, so using dial-up for essentials only. Logged into US PS forum this evening and there was a link to Tamebay, but not as I knew it. Thought it was an imposter!

  25. The whole site was less busy when we started off Mark – there’s a lot more going on now and a lot more visitors all looking for something different 😯

Impossible to please all the people all of the time, but I think Sue has done an absolutely outstanding job in not only making the site look good but making it work in the best way possible for most of the people most of the time 😛

  26. Kate: good 🙂 Will sort the forum out too – I see that’s running on fixed text sizes as well. Thanks for pointing that out.

  27. I sell on Ebay Chris…

I will adapt to the change.

    I think I liked the old colours…

I still appreciate this resource though and check it daily 🙂

  28. @ Chris – thanks!

and if we are honest, nobody really is going to get upset about the design, whether we preferred one thing or another – when it comes down to it, the content is why we are here…isn’t it??
