Preview of the new Skypephone 2 from 3 mobile

No primary category set

For everyone that loved the Skypephone there’s some great news – there’s a new updated model in development and it should be even better than the first. As rumours began spreading mobile operator 3 confirmed them saying “We are working on a new 3 Skypephone to follow on from the success of the first version.

They’re short on detail but have confirmed that it’ll be again be a 3G model with an upgraded 3.2 megapixel camera instead of the old 2 megapixel. Sadly the camera is still on the rear of the phone meaning no video conferencing capability. RSS looks like a great feature that may be available on the new Skypephone, the screen shows an RSS symbol so it may be possible to get your favourite feeds (like TameBay) direct to your handset.

The part number will be WMA8709 and the phone when released will be the IMP2. The manufacturer of the original Skypephone, AMOI will again build the new one.

It appears that the new Skypephone has been approved by the FCC and some are speculating this indicates a quad band Skypephone meaning it could be used in the US.

I’m looking forward to the release of the new phone, I’ll be first in line to grab one when it becomes available.

  1. No it’s not a Nokia – it’s a phone specifically manufactured for 3 – it runs Skype calls across the 3 mobile network and then breaks them out onto the Internet

  2. Apart from the keys which look more fiddley it looks pretty much like the old one, screen looks the same size but we would have to wait for the full specs.
I hope theres more phone memory and the screen is viewable in daylight anyone know when it will be onsale and how much it will cost.Just hope 3 and AMOI have been reading the forums and have noted all the bugs that need fixing….CTID

  3. its about time they upgraded their coverage
3 would do better with a tin can and string in our area ,even smoke signals are more effective,

  4. I’m hoping they’ll improve the very clunky software that came with the last version, and also that they’ll sort the exif data so that my phone will tell Flickr what it is 😆

  5. I’ve been contemplating one of these for a while but like norf, the coverage isn’t great around here either for many apart from vodafone & orange.

I’ll be interested in your take on the new one when you get it Chris, the better camera has to be a bonus too. I have a camera on the back of my Sony Ericsson but it will conference through another small camera on the front, only used that once tho 😀

  6. #5 I’ve heard a rumour that they have improved the software! Apparently there’ll be no need for drivers on CD to use it as a modem as it’ll work self install much like the 3 USB Broadband dongle. Hopefully that also means you’ll be able to simply browse to it for photos similar to any other USB stick.

  7. I can flog you a hand held mirror if yer need to do video conferencing 😆

  8. northumbrian I live in cheshire and 3s coverage is very hit and miss I am roaming most of the time I can only get 3g in one room upstairs but I was in skeggness few weeks back and had a top signal there-Get your skates on 3

  9. we would get a better service with homing haggis than 3 provide,
even in Edinburgh its very hit and miss
