ChannelAdvisor sue defamatory spammer

CATEGORY: News

Back on the 12th of August a spam email was circulated to many ChannelAdvisor customers alleging that ChannelAdvisor overcharged their clients and were running up legal bills which “may cause the Company to be no longer financially viable”.

The emails were sent from a number of gmail accounts and urged ChannelAdvisor customers to audit the fees charged. It also urged customers to email or telephone Scot Wingo, ChannelAdvisor CEO, as well as providing his direct contact details.

Today ChannelAdvisor posted an update advising that they have tracked the source of the emails to a disgruntled ex-employee who “illegally took ChannelAdvisor customer contact information and used it to email out the defamatory allegations, trying to cause harm to ChannelAdvisor’s reputation and business relationships”.

ChannelAdvisor have commenced litigation in US District Court against the ex-employee as well as changing internal software and processes to protect against bulk downloading of information in the future.

ChannelAdvisor told TameBay that “due to potential legal ramifications we are unable to comment”. It’ll be interesting to watch the case progress as it will then become a matter of public record.
