eBay has announced that its own developer program is to merge with PayPal’s (or be “absorbed by PayPal’s“, as Auctionbytes has it). The current head of engineering at PayPal, Matthew Mengerink, is to head up the new business; he writes:
we have decided to come together as one team to give developers one ecommerce solution – a complete approach to commerce online and offline that gives you more access, resources and support than ever before. I’m honored to now lead this newly combined open platform business, made up of the assets of both eBay and PayPal platforms.
The eBay Developer Conference, which had been scheduled for June, has been cancelled; developers can instead attend the renamed Innovate X, Innovate 2011, taking place October 12-13th at Moscone West in San Francisco. The conference change is the only substansive announcement so far; no new technology has been revealed, though Matthew promises “with your great ideas and our technology foundation, we can define and create the ‘new retail’ for customers around the world.”
I know we have a few developers reading TameBay – Eddie, Ryan, Neil, where are you? – so please do leave us a comment and let us know what you think.
Sorry about the image, I just couldn’t resist.

Wonderful image!
So, it appears that the era of separation has come to an end and traffic is now flowing in consolidation mode once again.
Interesting.
