William & Kate marriage boosts sales on eBay

People across the UK and around the world are sitting down to watch the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton who will hence forth be known as their Royal Highnesses Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the highest rank in British Peerage.

William also became the Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus, which means Kate will become the Countess of Strathearn and Baroness Carrickfergus.

eBay has been a bellwether of the interest in the Royal marriage with sales on eBay UK in the ‘Royal’ category up 132% year on year and sales of items relating to the future king, Prince William up a staggering 12,491% year on year.

Street parties will be taking place across the country with over 5000 road closures so it’s no surprise to hear sales of bunting on eBay having risen 168% and flag sales are up 32% with eBay UK is currently selling a Union Jack item every two minutes.

The romantic engagement has also sparked wedding fever across Europe – a wedding dress has sold every minute on eBay since January.

eBay spokesperson Ruth Szyszkowski said “The Royal Wedding has been a great boost for the retail sector, and we’re sure the Prime Minister will be pleased to see that Brits are stocking up on bunting, flags, and all things British to make today a real day of celebration for all to remember for a long time to come.”

We wish the Royal Couple a long and happy marriage.

  1. I think people need to get a grip, seems some kind of national psychosis has taken hold 😉 The Pomp and ceremony hyperbole is just a symptom of the Great British Malaise, and our rapidly waning national identity. A great deal of irony here IMHO. Tis all Fantasy Island and PR. Best of luck ’em both though (although whoever did Kate’s fierce makeup might want to have be had a quiet word! She’ll be on Dragon’s Den next!)

  2. I thought the goverment was trying to get people off a life time of benefits and back into employment. Now we have another pounce on the Civil List.

  3. great bit of business for UK plc better than any email marketing campaign , or google ad
Londons throbbing with yanks and Aussies it might mean we will be able to flog some dead stock of Royal memorabilia tat,
its also kept those bloody awful armed toyota hilux 4x4s racing up and down the desert off the news

  4. it’s only good PR if people buy into it. It’s based on a premise that you, me, and everyone else on this site are “commoners”. Well, apart from Chris, of course!

Surprising number of Us based eBayers saying the same thing on the latest Royal eBay.com facebook update (come buy/ sell your silly merchandise, and pay through the nose to do so, too).

People get wrapped up in the furore and spectacle. If you stand back, it’s utterly bonkers (notwithstanding the historical legacy). I know plenty of people around the world who all think it’s a trifle silly (although Pippa and i will be announcing our coupling soon).

  5. Don’t I remember an American(I think it was Mark Twain) who said “All Kings are descended from Sheep Stealers”. Over hundreds of years they have gone from such “humble” origins to what you all saw on TV(I was watching the Indian Premier League Cricket and World Championship Snooker)
