Reminder: PayPal outage planned for Friday morning UK Time

Remember: the PayPal service will be unavailable for about an hour or so on Friday morning UK time. An hour long scheduled maintenance window is predicted from 10pm Pacific Time (PT). We reckon this means PayPal will be out of action from roughly 06:00 BST on Friday morning.

According to the official statement on PayPal’s blog from Anuj Nayar, senior director of PayPal Global Corporate Communications: “To ensure that PayPal continues to offer the best possible products and services to our customers, we are planning a technology migration of our data center on Thursday, April 19, 2012, starting at approximately 10 p.m. PT. We expect it to last 45- 60 minutes. During this time, there will be a system-wide interruption to the PayPal service and our website. This means that customers will not be able to log into or use their PayPal accounts. Rest assured that, during this time, all funds will be secured as usual by PayPal’s powerful security and fraud protection.”

You can read the full statement here on the PayPal blog.

eBay.co.uk hasn’t made this information public on its own announcement board or via other proactive channels.

Maintenance such as this might be essential, but when an eBay seller can’t login to their PayPal account on Friday morning first thing, they would be justified in being alarmed. Once again, eBay’s laziness and poor communications will frustrate and annoy loyal, fee-paying customers.

Update: 19th April, 15:51 BST. For a far more detailed look at the outages and times, check out this page. It is also worth noting that eBay posted an announcement earlier today and some people have received an email notification.

  1. I had two payments fail last night, 18th April, at about 10:30. Everything looked normal but no email receipt and my PP account not debited. Another at the same time went through OK. One to UK, one to US failed, one to Germany OK.

  2. I had a ‘personal’ email from PP and this also said:

    ‘ … API/firewall reconfiguration

This email also serves as a reminder to ensure your firewalls are ready to accept traffic following this upgrade.

If you’ve hard-coded our IP addresses into your API calls and/or firewall settings, these settings may need to be reconfigured after the upgrade. Here are the updated lists:

o IP address for PayPal servers

o IP address for Sandbox PayPal servers.

If you need assistance in reconfiguring the IP addresses or have questions about the upgrade, please contact PayPal Merchant Technical Support

We appreciate your patience as we complete this upgrade. We value your business and apologise for any inconvenience caused. …’

  3. I also had a brief ‘personal’ email from eBay:

‘To ensure that PayPal continues to offer the best possible products and services to our customers, PayPal will be performing system maintenance on 20 April from 6.00 am until 7.00 am. During this time, customers (sellers and buyers) may receive an error message that prevents them from logging into or using their PayPal accounts. Once the maintenance is complete, customers will be able to process their payment.

Thank you for your patience while we do this work to improve the reliability and performance of our services.

    Regards,

    The eBay team’

    Did everyone not get one?

  4. I suspect that I will roll over and go back to sleep for a hour. Then about 9am I will have a look to see if Paypal still works. If it does I may wake up. If not I will go back to sleep for a while.

  5. They’ve cunningly scheduled this to run into ebay’s regular friday maintenance, so we can expect the PS board to be jammed with whingers.

  6. This can’t be as bad as Amazon – I am constantly having pending payments that sometimes clear week or 2 later or just disappear. It deducts from my inventory until it drops off. This is more annoying than a little planned outage (well communicated)

  7. Hi – has anyone else whose website is set up to take Paypal payments had issues since this maintenance took place?

NO custoemrs have been able to pay for orders through our site using Paypal since very early Friday morning. Paypal have confirmed the problem is their end but have not yet come back to advise further on sorting this out.

Has anyone else experienced problems since Friday?

    Cheers
