It’s all sizzling in the mobile payments space race, as PayPal reveals a trial of mobile payments with fast food giant McDonald’s in France.
According to reports, the French trial at 30 thirty locations allows McDonald’s customers to order food either online or on smartphones using a McDonald’s mobile app. These customers can then pay with PayPal. At the branch of McDonald’s, there will be a seperate queue where online orders can be collected.
As we reported earlier in the month, Starbucks have adopted Square as their preferred mobile payments provider, in a step that was widely seen as a blow to PayPal. But the potential of a PayPal/Macdonald’s partnership demonstrates that this is likely to be a long drawn out battle. A partnership that saw PayPal being used in McDonald’s 30,000 outlets worldwide would be a huge boost.
