The medals just keep flowing Britain’s way at the Paralympics, and today was no exception, although only one today was gold. First though we have the three medals from yesterday evening’s athletics.
Hannah Cockroft smashed the Paralympic record for the Women’s T34 Wheelchair 200m yesterday. Although she was expected to win, you can see just how much it meant to her from the picture on her Royal Mail gold medal stamp.
Royal Mail will paint another one of their post boxes gold to celebrate Hannah’s win, one has already been painted gold in Hannah’s hometown of Halifax to celebrate her first gold medal win.
Hot on the heels of Hannah, David Weir took to the track in the Men’s T34 800m wheelchair race producing yet another ParalympicsGB gold medal.
This is David’s third gold medal of the London 2012 Games, and the third time Royal Mail have designed a stamp in his honour capturing the moment he finished the race, roaring with his chest bared. They will of course be painting yet another pillar box gold in David’s honour.
We’ve not forgotten Jonnie Peacock, we should have the image of his stamp available after the weekend.
Josie Pearson Women’s F51/52/53 Discus Throw
There are few who would begrudge Josie her gold medal won in the discus today, she’s tried six different sports over the years and has at last found her niche. Having previously tried showjumping, dressage, wheelchair rugby, wheelchair racing, and club throwing she has triumphed in the discus not only with a gold medal, but also a world record scoring 1122 points for her 6.58m throw.
What’s more remarkable about Josie’s win is that in a competition of six throws per athletes (with the best throw counted) all six of Josie’s throws would have won her the gold medal!
We’ll bring you an image of Josie’s stamp as soon as it’s available and of course she’ll also get her own gold post box within the next few days.
Medal table standings as of Friday
This was the 32nd gold medal for Britain at the London 2012 games and keeps the country in second place behind the Aussies. Russia who now also have 32 gold medals are third placed as Britain has 40 silvers compared to their 35. Britain now has a total of 114 medals.
