Amazon trials Kindle vending machine

Amazon have revealed a new way to buy a Kindle: from a vending machine.

Amazon have confirmed that the vending machines have been available in some locations in the States including events spaces, shopping centres and airports since Novemeber.

Amazon said: “We’re very happy with the customer response so far, and are excited to give customers another easy way to purchase accessories and also Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets,” the spokesperson said.

I’m a fairly devoted Kindle user myself, but not so much for books. I use mine for all those pesky word docs and PDFs and the like that one accumulates (especially for work). I find mine really vital.

For books, generally, I’m still a big fan of dead tree media (although I do use both). For vending machines to be useful, especially for people on the move who want some reading right now, say at an airport or railway station, is to make sure they are preloaded with some decent content that a buyer wants right now. The set up could be easier.

Also, are people going to be relaxed about buying a £199 item from a vending machine? I guess I might, I’ve got close with a train ticket.

It’s another interesting snippet from the ever inventive Amazon. With it they can bypass shops and remember that soon they may well have a bunch of space in Tube stations along side their pick up lockers.

  1. If the vending machine had WiFi built-in the purchaser could connect and purchase any books they wanted to read; all from the Amazon store of course.
