If you’ve had any unpaid items today on eBay or people having problems paying with PayPal, it might be a result of a tech meltdown at the Lloyds Banking group. Lloyds has 30 million customers including those with Lloyds, TSB, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, and on Sunday afternoon a server problem meant that many couldn’t use their debit cards to pay or withdraw cash at ATMs.
Apparently, 2 of the 7 servers they use to process payments fell over resulting in the problems. It’s not clear whether a cyber security attack or failed maintenenace might have been involved.
In a statement, Lloyds said: “We apologise that earlier today, between 3pm and 6pm, some customers were unable to complete their debit card transactions. Although the majority of transactions were unaffected, we are very sorry for the inconvenience that this will have caused. At the same time, some customers encountered problems at approximately half of our 7,000 ATMs. This was resolved by 7.30pm, and all of our ATMs are now working.”

Reports on the bbc over the weekend suggested online transactions weren’t affected. Not sure how accurate that is?
something similar seems to happen every few months with some bank system or other
