eBay have announced for private sellers. The maximum fee charged per item will rise from £75 to £250.
As a private seller without a Basic Shop, this means that if you sell an item for under £2,500 your final value fee will be 10% of the total transaction price (including postage). If your item sells for over £2,500 you will be charged a maximum final value fee of £250. Previously you’d hit the maximum fee of £75 with a sale price of £750.
As a private seller with a Basic Shop, this means if you sell an item for under £3,125 your final value fee will be 8% of that total transaction price (including postage). If your item sells for over £3125 you will be charged a maximum final value fee of £250. Previously if private sellers with a basic shop would hit the maximum fee of £75 with a sale price of £937.50.
The change obviously won’t affect eBay Motors or Property listings which have a different fee structure.
This change will only affect sellers of high value items, but for those edge cases a 333.33% price hike is significant. Our advice… if you’re thinking of listing an expensive item on your private selling account make sure the listing goes live before the 2nd of September when the new fee cap kicks in

That’s even more items that will not be sold on ebay.
Sadly it won’t reduce the 99p garbage sold by hopeful sellers taking advantage of free listing promotions.
eBay should scrap free listing promotions and greatly INCREASE the FVF for any auction that completes with only a single bid for under £2.99
I would suggest a 100% fee for single bid sales under £3 – then we would see just how confident some sellers are when cluttering up the site with all their crap from under the stairs, garage, shed, attic, etc… My guess is they won’t bother.

I have a modest collection of Triang Minic Ships. Often these are listed for 99p and many attract numerous bids and sell for many times the starting price. However not all.
Just because a particular model does not attract numerous bids does not mean that it is ‘Crap’ except to a total idiot. Certainly I have added many models to my collection for less than Alex’s £2-99 and some of them have been purchased when I was the only bidder.
If his proposed ‘Rules’ were to be implimented then many would leave ebay and this is both buyers and sellers. I fail to see how driving people like me who have a specific interest away to another site could possibly benefit ebay or indeed buyers or sellers.
Might I suggest that Alex starts to think about what he proposes because currently there is no sign that he is even capable of thought.
On the face of it, this seems like a bad move. However I suspect that the majority of private sales are under £75 so most will not be affected by this. I have a feeling that Ebay are targeting those business sellers who are using a private ID to get around expensive FVFs as business sales were not capped at £75.
Ebay Bod 1: “Hmmm we need to increase our profit margins, we can’t have Paypal propping us up all the time”
Ebay Bod 2: “Why don’t we invest in the site, really talk to and understand sellers and offer tiered fees to promote more sales?”
Ebay Bod 1: “Nah, to much effort, why don’t we just hike the fees up for private sellers? I bet we can make up to £250 per sale and no one will be able to say anything, as we are Ebay and can do what we want”
Ebay Bod 2: “Oh yeah fee hikes always work”
