BST Ends, GMT starts this Sunday

Clocks back one hourYou probably don’t even need to be aware that the Summer is over and British Summer time ends this weekend. Your smartphone, computer and television will almost certainly take care of turning your clocks back an hour for you.

What you do need to be aware of is that your eBay listings will all finish an hour early if they’re live before Saturday and finish on Sunday or at later date.

Clocks go back this SundayEach year we have a rash of ebayer’s claiming eBay stole an hour from their auctions. But that’s not the case, for instance a 7 day auction will still run for exactly 7 days (168 hours).

As an example, if you started your listing on a 7 day auction starting last Sunday at 9pm, it will end at 8pm this coming Sunday. If BST was still current then your listing would end at 9pm this Sunday, but as the clocks will have changed 9pm BST becomes 8pm GMT hence your listing will end at 8pm.

  1. damn forgot this again, a right pain in the arris. Whilst auctions still run for the same amount of hours, if bidders had 9pm in mind for finish (as that was the time when started) then they will miss the auction as it finished at 8pm.

  2. Why cannot ebay simply allow auctions to finish at the time they were initially set to finish rather than adding or subtracting 1 hour? This time shift twice each year is negative for both sellers and buyers.

  3. ebay are happy to produce code that removes feedback from outlets but not happy to produce code that allows auctions to finish at the same time that they started?

The argument about loosing an hour once each year does not stack up as swings and roundabouts you gain an hour once each year so it evens out. I doubt people would complain as they would realise higher prices which in turn means ebay get increased revenue so its a win win situation!

After all who wants their auction to finish during corrie or eastenders?

  4. North you will be affected as your auctions will now end before the programs start if you planned to end during! We time our auctions to end in an evening but either side of these popular programs not during. ebays twice annual auction end time shift does not help.
