Facebook denies that outage result of a cyberattack

You might not have noticed, but apparently overnight Facebook and Instagram were subject to an outage meaning that users couldn’t sign in to use the services. At first it was reported that the cause of the 40 minute outage was the result of third party cyber-attack but Facebook have now denied that was the case.

Here’s the Facebook statement: “Earlier this evening many people had trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram. This was not the result of a third party attack but instead occurred after we introduced a change that affected our configuration systems. We moved quickly to fix the problem, and both services are back to 100% for everyone.”

Apparently all is up and running now. What it did make me reflect on was how reliable Facbook is, say, compared with eBay. This is the first significant outage for Facebook since 2010 and 40 minutes downtime does compare favourably with eBay’s various outages last year alone.

eBay is, of course, huge but Facebook is way bigger and it’s pretty amazing that they manage to keep on top of the total tonnage of guff people post day in day out on there.
