myHermes, is helping the South African Fruit Industry and its growers’ association Hortgro Services to deliver thousands of books to underprivileged schoolchildren in Africa.
This is the third year in a row that myHermes has assisted the ‘Help a South African School’ campaign, and last year the company collected 28 pallets worth of books from nearly 50 schools.
The campaign encourages pupils, parents and teachers across the UK to donate unwanted textbooks and reading books, which will then be sent to unprivileged children at farm schools and rural schools in South Africa. ‘Help a South African School’ is an annual initiative with the purpose of delivering much sought after educational resources to the country’s most impoverished regions. Only 20% of South African schools have access to a library and therefore illiteracy is a big problem across the country.
As well as donating books to be transported by myHermes, there is also a collage competition with prizes of up to £1,000 towards resources for the winning schools. If you’d like your child’s school to be involved more details are available on the Help a South African School website.
