eBay to streamline apps post PayPal split

eBay will be removing several mobile apps and rolling them into one as it reviews its operations post-split with payPal.

The move was announced in a blog post yesterday. The distinct eBay Valet, eBay Motors and eBay Fashion apps will be discontinued and the functionality rolled into the general eBay App for tablets and smartphones.

This is no bad thing: it will save time and money and hopefully provide a better experience for shoppers.

RJ Pittman, eBay’s Chief Product Officer says: “We are starting with a focused effort to bring the best of eBay’s features and functionality together in one easy place for our customers. We will do this by retiring some of our vertical mobile apps and migrating the functionality into our flagship eBay app. As an early leader in mobile commerce we have created significant business value and insights from these special-purpose apps. Over the years we have integrated many of the insights, learnings, and functionality into our core mobile experiences. Our objective is simple: give our customers the easiest way to experience the best that eBay has to offer.”

We suspect that we’ll be seeing more announcements along these lines in the coming weeks as eBay reviews the situation and its business properly. They desperately need to shine in their first quarter results as an independent entity and keenly delivering on profitable priorities will surely mean than some previously indulgent projects fall by the wayside.
