Asda kiboshes Black Friday

Walmart-owned UK supermarket chain Asda has announced it will not be feeding the frenzy of flash sales and super deals on Black Friday this year.

Asda chief executive Andy Clarke said: “The decision to step away from Black Friday is not about the event itself. Over the last two years we’ve developed an organised, well-executed plan, but this year customers have told us loud and clear that they don’t want to be held hostage to a day or two of sales.”

To some extent Black Friday makes sense in the US. It’s the Friday after Thanksgiving and represents the starting gun for the Christmas rush. Obviously we don’t have Thanksgiving in the UK but the day also coincides with the weekend that will be November payday for many.

We can see a great deal of logic in Asda’s decision. It removes a great deal of pressure on the stores and staff to deliver on two peak days. We agree with them, it makes sense to stretch out the Christmas season rather focus on gimmicks like Black Friday.

I’d rather have a steady period of sales rather than a 1 day spike and then nothing.

My December offering will be better than for the other 11 months but not in tthe words of the Bowie song ‘(Heroes) just for one day’.

    Kudos to ASDA!
