The Easter weekend is important for retail. It marks the start of the Spring season and should bring a boost to the balance sheets.
It seems that Good Friday was buoyant in the fine weather. But the number of visits to shopping centres and high streets around the country slumped 6% and 10.5% on Saturday and Monday compared with last Easter as the bad weather pounded the country.
Analyst Diane Wehrle of Springboard notes: “Easter Monday is usually the best day for high street retailers because people have finished all their DIY. However, as Storm Katie swept in, it seems shoppers have chosen to stay at home rather than venturing out into the wind and rain.”
That’s hardly surprising as the weather was pretty bad. But what is unclear is whether there was a corresponding fillip for web sales and online.
So maybe you can can offer some illuminating insights? Did you have a good weekend for sales over Easter?
