Amazon Australia launch delayed 6 months to Sept 2017

Australia FlagWe’ve been hearing rumours that Amazon are to launch in Australia with general merchandise sales, FBA and Food. However latest news is that the launch has been put back six months from March 2017 and now won’t launch until September next year.

AFR reports that an investment fun manager received a briefing from an Amazon insider and confirmed that they’ll be setting up fulfilment centres as well as physical stores. The reason for the launch delay is apparently so that Amazon can have fresh food offerings ready at the same time as general merchandise – They want to take Australia by storm.

Australians already spend somewhere in the region of $500 million to $700 million on Amazon even though there’s no local Aussie site. With the common language and culture, it looks like a no brainer for UK merchants to sell on Amazon Australia when it launches, the only downside being having to ship your goods to the other side of the world to put them into Australia FBA.

Our take on this is that there will be a definite advantage for first movers, competition will be low at launch so the quicker you get your stock into Amazon Australia after launch the more successful you’re likely to be.
