Another Post Office strike coming on 3rd December

Unite the Union will be joining Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) members in strike action on the 3rd of December.

The 700 Unite members are Crown Post Office managers protesting about pensions. The Post Offices affected are Crown branches.

The CWU are in a dispute with the Post Office regarding jobs, Crown Post Office franchises and the final salary pension scheme of members.

Unite’s officer for the Post Office, Brian Scott, said: “We are taking this action because the management refuses to talk in a constructive manner about the pension scheme which is currently in surplus to more than £143m.

This is the retirement income of our members which is at stake and we are not going to stand idly by and let them lose thousands of pounds when they retire.”

Mark Davies of the Post Office says: “We are extremely sorry that the unions are attempting to disrupt services for people sending parcels and cards to loved ones in the run-up to Christmas.

However, we would like to reassure our customers that, if a strike goes ahead on December 3, it will impact less than 300 of our 11,600 branches. It will be business as usual in 97% of our network.”

  1. I don’t agree with the programme of main post office closures and squeezing them into WH Smiths and other shops.

Their consultation excercise is just a sham, as we found in our own town recently, despite 200 objections, the move went ahead.

But what exactly does striking achieve?

It won’t bother the Post Office management, or the government who still owns it.

The only ones to be hit are the customers, who always get it in the neck when strike action is called.

It’s 2016, not 1976. Strikes don’t work any more. Companies won’t give ground for fear of setting a precendent and governments will never be seen to bow to strike action.

If you are really that p*ssed off with your conditions, why not find another job!

  2. The pension scheme has a surplus of £143 million and you are complaining? Try talking to redundant BHS staff!!!
