Amazon eyes up medicine and pharmaceuticals

The health business is big. Increasing obesity in the West and an ageing population too means that tablets and pills make good money. Branded cures and tinctures can command a great deal more than almost identical unbranded remedies. And now it looks like Amazon is eyeing up this multi-billion dollar pharmaceuticals sector.

As the report on CNBC says: “For the last few years, Amazon has held at least one annual meeting at its Seattle headquarters to discuss whether it should enter the pharmacy business, says two people familiar with the company’s plans. But this year, with the rise of high-deductible plans and the trend toward consumers paying for health care, it is ready to get more serious.”

Whilst it is by no means clear that Amazon might move in to the sector, perhaps even producing medicines itself, according to the reports they are now exploring the sector more keenly. They’re going to appoint new general manager to set up and lead a team to forge a strategy on healthcare goods including pharmaceuticals. They are also apparently talking with experts in the industry.

Amazon could be real disruptor in pharma, especially in the USA where the health sector is mostly private and also in flux under President Trump. Would you buy your prescriptions from Amazon?

  1. Ha yeah will all the fake items for sale on amazon, from china I would not buy anything like this from Amazon.

Will stick to Tesco and boots.

  2. Amazon don’t have a clue about medicines, they can’t even adhere to their own contradictory policy for the sale of meds and for the past 4 years have consistently been operating illegally allowing pharmacy only meds to be sold on amazon.co.uk
