eBay UK Spring 2017 Seller Release: New Links Policy & it’s impact on your listings

No primary category set

eBay are making changes to their links policy which will impact the information you can include on your listings and affect every third party provider who auto-inserts a credit link on your listings or builds it into your listing or shop design.

Contact information banned“We know that, for many sellers, offering telephone support is one of the ways to offer great customer service. From this summer, you’ll be able to indicate whether or not you’d like us to share your customer service phone number with buyers via the Ask a question link. We’ll be limiting when this feature is available to buyers based on customer usage and feedback”

Links Policy updates

eBay are also updating their links policy to limit links on the site to those to other eBay destinations, delivery services, product videos or legally-required information.

For the links that you are permitted to use in your listings, be sure to use the target=”_blank” attribute to your HTML. (This opens the link in a new window).

There is a serious impact to this policy – many sellers have listing designs and shop designs which carry a credit image to the designer or multichannel management provider that supplied it. Under the new links policy these will be banned. If the credit link is built into your design you will have to ask your supplier to remove it (and edit all of your active listings). If it’s an auto-inserted credit at the bottom of your listing, your supplier should stop the auto-insertion for future listings (and to edit all of your active listings to remove them).

  1. Really tedious but every year is.

I’ve booked in the work with our shop designers, it’s going to happen so may aswell get it out of the way.

  2. Hi Chris, just saw this article and checked the eBay links policy – the credit to designers / multi-channel providers are not banned as such. The links policy says it is allowed, it just cannot link to a website outside of eBay.

  3. This is going to be a huge problem for business selling personalised goods. We use an email address for customers to send personalisation and photos to complete the orders and send proofs. We cannot use ebay messages as they compress the photos making them unusable, so I’m not sure how I’m going to work around this? I’m not a happy seller and can see buyers getting annoyed. What a mess!
