The big five European markets with dedicated Amazon services are the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy. Of course, people in other countries can shop on Amazon but it’s not as easy. And now it looks like Amazon Switzerland will become the sixth European country with a bespoke service.
According to Bilanz, the launch is imminent and negotiations are already underway with couriers. (The article is in German.)
According to reports the first parcels are expected to ship in December or January. Swiss Post is expected to be the chosen carrier partner and Fliex Stieglitz, head of postal customs clearance at Swiss Post, has confirmed that the postal company is in talks with Amazon and said: “But there are still a few operational details we need to clarify.”
Obviously Switzerland is a prosperous nation but it’s not particularly populous. And it also isn’t inside the EU, so that may offer some logistical challenges. But, as a general rule, dedicated services from the big marketplaces are welcome so this is a good move. It is curious that countries such as Poland and the Czech Republic have yet to get a dedicated service, not least because they already host Amazon Fulfilment Centres that predominantly serve German shoppers.
This may be a sign that Amazon is upping its game and increasing its geographical footprint. Just this week Amazon Australia finally launched and there is chat of other frontiers being opened up. eBay doesn’t beat Amazon on many fronts but it does have more dedicated national websites honed to local populations.
As it stands, we don’t know exactly what the Swiss service will look like and whether it will also be serviced with FBA facilities. That does, however, seem likely. We shall keep you posted as more information emerges.
Will you be selling on Amazon Switzerland if you can?
