Amazon owned and Dubai based online marketplace Souq has anounced that over one million Amazon products are now available to Middle Eastern shoppers via its Amazon Global Store.

The products from Amazon became available in the UAE on Monday and the idea to expand choice in verticals where Souq is lacking in selection specifically including clothing and accessories. The Souq chief executive Ronaldo Mouchawar said in due course many millions of Amazon products would become available.

Mouchawar said: “This brings global selection closer to our customers in the region, and we will continue to grow this further.”

There are some interesting features on Souq. Customers can order goods with priority shipping that will see delivery within 2 to 5 days to the UAE. Expedited shipping options mean delivery in 6 to 10 days. For ease all prices are inclusive of import fees and taxes with the aim of ensuring that the goods coming in are not delayed at customs.

The United Arab Emirates, and the Middle East in general, offer significant challenges for ecommerce traders. For instance, there is no unified postage service in the region and the they doesn’t have a system of post codes for added complexity.

But by significantly increasing the number of products available the firm is providing more choice to online shoppers and developing a significant toehold in the area which has significant future potential.
