The app from the Wish marketplace became the most downloaded shopping app in the USA in 2017, according to reports. The marketplace focuses on daily deals and low cost goods and has over 300 million products for sale.
In terms of downloads across the iOS App Store and Google Play, according to data from App Annie, Sensor Tower, and Apptopia, Wish was more popular than even Amazon. Sensor Tower reported that it has 32.5 million U.S. downloads compared to Amazon’s 29.2 million. Interestingly App Annie wrote that Wish’s top ranking was largely driven by the Google Play downloads. That does suggest that Android users are more price sensitive than Apple device users.
The Wish marketplace was founded by Google engineer Peter Sculczewski and Yahoo! engineer Danny Zhang in 2011. Last year, a spokesperson for Wish explained it appeals: “Because of the unique Wish interface, we have thrived off of millennials making impulse purchases. Half our customers are under the age of 30 which represents a very different demographic to other marketplaces. We also have a very strong female bias – however in general our demographic is rapidly broadening in line with smartphone adoption rates.”
