A new Amazon UK fulfilment centre (FC) is understood to be opening in north Leicestershire, the second such facility in the county. Reports say that they have have already agreed a deal with the developers for a 500,000 sq ft site at the £700 million East Midlands Gateway which is currently being built on land north of East Midlands Airport.
The new Amazon building apparently will have a footprint of roughly the size of eight full-size football pitches. The building will have two mezzanine floors to provide 1.3m sq ft of space and is expected to be ready by April 2019 and create create up to 3300 jobs. To put that scale into perspective the O2 Arena in London, for instance, sits on a plot of about 1.1 million sq ft.
Both deals are expected to be confirmed over the coming days, once the details have been finalised. Don’t forget, Amazon already has a 1 million sq ft fulfilment centre in Bardon Hill, Coalville making it a big presence and significant employer in the area.
And news of this continued expansion should also hearten merchants who will be pleased to see Amazon has the confidence to further build out their evermore enormous fulfilment network in the UK. And if Amazon is worried about Brexit, and delaying key investments, then it’s not outwardly obvious to observers.
