The marketplace is making changes to Etsy policies and you should have received an email with details. In particular the focus is on data and transparency. We’ve detailed the major changes below. Don’t forget that by continuing to use the Etsy services on or after May 23, 2018, you acknowledge their updated Privacy Policy and agree to the rest of the updated House Rules, according to the Etsy Ts and Cs.
It’s very much a theme at the moment: tech and online firms are increasingly focussed on data and privacy issues and these changes reflect that. How will these Etsy policies updates impact your trading? Probably not at all. But you should read, mark and inwardly digest them in any case. But they don’t relate to fees. Phew.
Here’s what they say about the Etsy policies changes coming up as sent by email to sellers:
- Transparency: We’ve provided additional details about the information we collect and how we use that information. We’ve also explained your choices and the control you have over your information.
- GDPR: On May 25, 2018, a new European Union (EU) data protection law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), takes effect. The GDPR gives individuals in the EU more control over how their data is used and places certain obligations on businesses that process information of those individuals. We’ve updated our Privacy Policy to take into account the new requirements of the GDPR.
- Functionality: Depending on your location, we may provide you with the ability to access, download, and request deletion of your personal information.
You can always review the Etsy policies, or house rules as they call them, here.
Etsy is going through a period of transformation that is at once delighting and annoying retailers. But the changes so far have meant that in the first quarter of 2018 that Etsy saw its first 3 months of $1bn in sales turnover. Are you convinced Etsy is on the right track?
One Response
Removing buyer emails from seller records means that sellers no longer have a way of sending some digital products to their customers, or even to contact buyers, since some buyers disable or do not respond to Etsy Conversations. Etsy needs to build some alternatives to replace email addresses, and they have 1 month to do it.
(The $1 billion in sales was 4th quarter 2017 – the 1st quarter 2018 results come out May 8. )
