Homewares and furniture retailer and marketplace Wayfair is embracing augmented reality to help shoppers visualise what the goods for sale will look like in their homes with new features in their Android app.
The 3D visualization feature is now available to millions of consumers who use android devices. Built with ARCore, Google’s augmented reality platform, Wayfair’s “View in Room 3D” mobile app feature makes it possible for shoppers to see virtual furniture and décor in their homes before they buy.
At Wayfair, we’re continually developing innovative technology features that make shopping for your home – from your home – not just easier, but preferred. Leveraging augmented reality, the Wayfair app allows shoppers to transform their homes into virtual showrooms, allowing them to see their favorite products up close and at every angle – all in their very own space. We’re excited to make this innovative capability available to our customers across tens of millions of Android devices.

There’s no doubt that we’ll be seeing more natty app features such as this available to online shoppers in due course. And as online gaming becomes more popular, things which my seem outlandish and peripheral to older hands at the ecommerce game, are just entirely normal to younger (specifically millennial) shoppers. AR isn’t going anywhere.
One question which presents itself when considering augmented reality is the extent to which the marketplaces can help merchants plug in to these ways of displaying goods and clinching sales with ease. Sellers will be rightly reluctant to spend on and create 3D imagery if it can be piggybacked by other merchants free of charge.
