Amazon in Canada to add 3K high tech jobs

Amazon in Canada has said it will be adding 3000 high tech jobs when it expands its Vancouver Tech Hub. The totally new jobs will include positions in ecommerce technology, cloud computing and machine learning. Amazon already has a total of 6000 Canadian employees. The new facility will span 416,000 square feet and open in 2022.

The announcement of the new facility and building was made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The new Amazon employees will be accommodated in a tower the company is building on the site of the city’s old post office and they say that structure’s architectural heritage will be preserved.

We chose to build and grow in Canada because we recognize the diverse and exceptionally talented workforce here,” he said. As a homegrown British Columbian and a software engineer, I am so proud of living and working in a city that is recognized worldwide as a first-rate global tech hub.

Further expansion for Amazon in Canada may also be in the offing. Toronto made the shortlist of twenty cities under active consideration to be the possible home of the new Amazon headquarters referred to as HQ2. The location of the new facility is expected to be revealed at some point this year. The new HQ will be equal to the company’s first home in Seattle and will be the base for 50k Amazonians. Amazon has produced a list of requirements for the host city.

They want a pleasant city with cultural sophistication and a high quality of living is sought and universities are vital. Transport links, especially an airport, are required and the location simply needs space for what is going to be a huge workplace.

Amazon’s growth isn’t going to stop any time soon. As we reported just this week the total of people 560,000 people work for the company around the world meaning that Amazon employees could populate a small country.
