eBay will accept Apple Pay

It’s all change with payments at eBay as PayPal is retrenched (it will be an option but not the preferred payments partner) and the new Adyen service is already shaking up eBay payments at this early stage. And now it has been confirmed: eBay will accept Apple Pay.

We’ve written about this significant change several times before. It will impact every eBay seller in due course, but right now there isn’t much for UK merchants to do but keep an eye on developments stateside where it has commenced testing.

eBay says it is on track to start managing payments on a limited scale in the US early this autumn, at which time buyers will be able to use Apple Pay to purchase items from sellers participating in the initial phase of the new payments experience.

To begin with Apple Pay will only be available to a small number of eBay buyers and sellers. eBay will continue to expand the new payments system over the course of 2019 and expects to have transitioned a majority of its marketplace customers to its new payments system by 2021. As the company rolls out its new payments experience to include more volume in more geographies, Apple Pay will be available to more customers, on more items and in more regions.

Apple Pay is one of the most ubiquitous forms of payments and provides users with an easy, fast and secure way to pay. Offering Apple Pay as a form of payment on eBay is the first step in providing more choice and flexibility in payment options to our tens of millions of buyers.

Managing the end-to-end payments experience on eBay’s Marketplace is a key initiative for the company. As we expand our new payments experience over the coming months, we look forward to offering our global customers many other forms of payments on our platform.
– Steve Fisher, SVP of payments, eBay

This is a good sign and an indication of what the new eBay “intermediated” payments system will offer sellers and buyers. It will mean much greater choice of payments systems being available and that’s a good thing.
