ChannelAdvisor have surveyed 50 sellers to get an ecommerce seller snapshot for 2018. Want to know what your competitors are doing and how your business shapes up against theirs? The ecommerce seller snapshot infographic reveals all.
There are a couple of caveats we would put against this data – Firstly ChannelAdvisor have a preponderance of US based clients so some of the marketplaces (Walmart, Jet etc) will have been skewed as will the UK for being a top market to expand international sales to. You should also bear in mind that ChannelAdvisor targets large retailers and brands rather than SMEs and so again the data will be skewed towards the shape of their business model.
Setting aside the caveats, if you’re looking to grow and scale your business or if you’re already in the Tamebay £1m seller Club then there is plenty to be learned from studying large competitors.
The ecommerce seller snapshot reveals the number 1 fulfilment objective for 2018 is to improve demand forecasting as well as the 4 ecommerce challenges which are: Inventory Management; Pricing; Fulfilment; and Targeted Advertising.
Perhaps the most telling stat in the ecommerce seller snapshot is that 25% of sellers list products on 6 or more markets but a massive 63.5% currently don’t yet sell internationally with 30% not even planning to start selling overseas in the near future. Restricting you sales to your domestic country only is leaving a massive expansion opportunity. Why wouldn’t an ecommerce seller ship overseas?

Another caveat I would add is that ChannelAdvisor’s raison d’etre is multichannel ecommerce, so it should come as no surprise that 90% of their clients sell in more than one marketplace.
I’m impressed, though, that a quarter of retailers sell on 6 or more marketplaces.
