Adjustment to the expansion of eBay Shop by Product initiative

No primary category set

eBay are easing back on their catalogue requirements for the new eBay Shop by Product initiative for two categories. This is due to their recognition that timing isn’t ideal as we head into the busy Q4 critical trading period. They’ve obviously listened to sellers and heard their thoughts that this isn’t the ideal time of year for major changes, although catalogue will still be required for some products.

The Mobile & Smart Phones and the Tablets & eBook Readers categories will be exempted from the requirement to match listings to the eBay Catalogue from late September, with the exception of Apple products where the mandate is already in place. The mandate will remain for other categories already announced.

eBay will make the following announcement this afternoon:

Adjustment to the expansion of our Shop by Product initiative

“We’re working towards providing your buyers with a product-based shopping experience. Since we started, thousands of shoppers have used this experience to shop on eBay and we’re receiving many great contributions to our catalogue. We’re confident that we’re on the right path.

However, as we approach the busiest trading period of the year, we know your workload is increasing – you’re bringing in new inventory and have more and more orders that need to be fulfilled in a timely manner.

With this in mind, we’ve decided to adjust our plans regarding the expansion of our Shop by Product initiative.

With the exception of Apple devices where the catalogue mandate is already in place, we’re no longer requiring you to match your items with the eBay catalogue in the Mobile & Smart Phones and the Tablets & eBook Readers categories by late September. In other words, there will be no changes to the current listing experience for items in those two categories. You’ll start receiving notifications via email and in Seller Hub when you should start to revise those listings, well in advance of when catalogue matches will be required in 2019.

For the other categories announced, you’ll need to match your new and revised listings to products in our catalogue by late September. Use Seller Hub to identify all of your listings that need revising. And as a reminder, if the product you’re selling is not catalogued or inaccurately described, you’ll need to submit changes or a new catalogue entry before making the match.

  1. Gosh, they aren’t doing Christmas again this year, are they? It nearly caught eBay out – good job they realised it in time.
