FedEx launches 7-day a week delivery ‘to meet the demands of shoppers’

FedEx have announced the 7-day a week delivery in their ongoing bid to meet “the demands of ecommerce shippers and online shoppers” in the US.

The move will expand FedEx’ delivery promise which will include Sunday residential deliveries in 2020.

FedEx will launch the service at the beginning of January next year to replicate the shipping they offer during the peak season.

FedEx say that they have made “significant investments in capacity, technology and automation” over two decades to build a solid infrastructure. FedEx are now positioned to extend their parcel intake as the average daily volume for small parcels in the US is expected to double by 2026. This means that as shoppers order more online, merchants will have the tools to stay on top of the customers’ expectations.

The company is also rapidly integrating FedEx SmartPost package volume into FedEx Ground standard operations and increasing large package capabilities.

Delivery density

FedEx are also making changes to enhance their efficiency in last-mile deliveries. Nearly two million FedEx SmartPost packages that were previously given to the USPS will be integrated into FedEx operations and delivered by the same service providers currently handling FedEx residential packages.

In 2016, FedEx started strategically allocating FedEx SmartPost stock into the FedEx Ground network so that all deliveries destined to the same or nearby address travel together. This has resulted in the integration of approximately 20% of FedEx SmartPost packages to date. This autumn, the integration of these packages will be significantly accelerated, and the vast majority of FedEx SmartPost package volume is expected to be integrated into FedEx Ground operations for final delivery by the end of 2020.

Large items

Oversized and heavy items now comprise more than 10% of FedEx Ground’s volume. FedEx say that the growth is expected to continue. The supplier are making operational changes to ensure safe and reliable handling of these large items. These changes include designing new facilities, adding equipment to existing facilities and making other operational adjustments.
