Why eBay UK 25 million monthly visitors is significant to eBay Inc

eBay have staked their future growth on the increase in active buyers coming to the marketplace. Looking at the numbers it appears that the eBay UK 25 million monthly visitors puts the UK way ahead of most other eBay sites. If Devin Wenig’s forecast that new buyers will translate into increased sales comes true, then eBay UK is set to excel.

In his introduction to the latest eBay Seller Release Video, eBay UK Vice President Rob Hattrell mentioned the eBay UK 25 million monthly visitors. 25 million is up from my last figure of 24 million in September 2018. eBay has an astounding penetration in the UK as with about 66 million people in the UK, discounting children about 53 million people, it’s over half the population. Royal Mail only deliver to 30 million addresses in the UK so around 5 out of 6 households browse eBay on a monthly basis.

eBay grew active buyers by 4% across its platforms to 180 million active buyers, up from 171 million in the first quarter of last year. We don’t have an accurate count of the numbers for the UK from a year ago, but we do know that eBay went from 179 million to 180 million in the last quarter and from 177 million in September 2018 and we know eBay UK’s published number in September.

If eBay UK has grown by 1 million users since September 2018 then this means that eBay UK has contributed around a third of the total worldwide new buyers number over the time period (or maybe more…. if the numbers are rounded).

There is a slight difference in the way visitors to eBay are reported. eBay in their reports to investors count ‘active users’, i.e. those who have made a purchase, whereas eBay UK report monthly visitors who may not have gone on to complete a purchase. Even so, it’s likely that a large majority of the million new visitors will convert to paying customers.

It’s no surprise that the eBay UK 25 million monthly visitors put eBay as the second biggest eBay territory in the world. Currently we believe the ranking order is:

  1. eBay USA (eBay.com)
  2. eBay UK
  3. eBay Korea
  4. eBay Germany
  5. eBay France

  1. There is a slight difference in the way visitors to eBay are reported. eBay in their reports to investors count ‘active users’, i.e. those who have made a purchase, whereas eBay UK report monthly visitors who may not have gone on to complete a purchase. ‘
And there is the truth…. if it were all so good why one story for investors and another for everyone else?
I wonder how many go to ebay, get faced with pages and pages of chinese sellers STILL claiming to be from the uk and walk away? Best giveaway is the addition of ‘uk stock’ put in the image!
Im still reporting…. ebay are still ignoring!

  2. They manipulate figure is many ways the most obvious is 2 visits per buyer.
    with the following scenario.

“I purchased this item in a size 10 and it does not fit so returning to exchange for a smaller size 8”.

The return is already automatically started so we cannot we have to do an automatic refund and they then have to buy the size they want.

112 exchanges wanted last month so that equated to 112 real true visits to eBay and 112 forced or fake visits to eBay.
They are very clever at adapting the truth to their shareholders and blowing smoke up their backsides.

  3. ” Even so, it’s likely that a large majority of the million new visitors will convert to paying customers.”

Why is it likely? What on earth is this based on?

  4. One thing I think a lot of would like to see with regards to eBay UK is actual genuine performance figures.
eBay.com is clearly in decline, but at least their most likely fudged figures are on purchases and still probably fudged.
eBay UK imaginary 25 million visits a month, trying to make it look like 25 million are shopping on eBay UK is a bare face lie…
The probably count every single log in, every single impression, the figures PR Bobs team have made up mean nothing.
I honestly do not know anyone who shops regular on eBay anymore. Include myself, I will do a quick compare the market, and most likely go direct or Amazon TBH…

I actually made about my 2nd ebay purchase this year last week, pair or work gloves and per normal still not here…China bay of course…thought I was buying from UK did not notice till Paypal receipt came in….

  5. @Chris Dawson. Is it “over half the population”? 25 million monthly visitors, depending on how you count them.

As a seller, I am on the site each day, does that count as 30 visits a month?

Strange that they do not report the count of ‘active users’.
