UPS are joining the fast delivery bandwagon with the scheduled launch of UPS 7-day delivery offering following the move of FedEx to every-day delivery promise.
The UPS decision to offer every-day residential delivery comes two months after FedEx announced a similar action, highlighting the wider movement of the industry towards an accelerated last-mile experience.
The delivery supplier say the new delivery extension is planned to go live on the 1st of January 2020. UPS will start the year by adding Sunday as a pick-up and delivery day.
UPS say the move builds on the their “market-leading position” to allow merchants reach customers faster with the products ordered over the weekend.
UPS plan to make this possible by leveraging the combination of their supporting services and partners. It will see the UPS Network, UPS Access Point locations and SurePost in collaboration with the United States Postal Service (USPS) giving a boost to UPS in their efforts to speed up the last mile promise.
The company are adding 10 million pounds of additional lift capacity, the largest current expansion of capacity by any carrier.
Over the last several months, UPS have significantly increased their market share in the next-day air package market, especially among the world’s largest ecommerce shippers. UPS continue to operate at a high level of aircraft capacity utilisation and are deploying aircraft to shipping lanes in line with market needs.
Previously announced investments in the UPS airline network are providing flexibility for growth as customer expectations shift toward faster delivery times.
UPS have already taken delivery of 18 of 44 new aircraft previously announced and will receive the remainder by 2022. In 2019, UPS will receive 11 aircraft, the most in any year of the current aircraft expansion program.
