eBay Spring 2020 Seller Release: Adding White Background to images

No primary category set

eBay are making adding white backgrounds to images easy. When using eBay mobile apps to list or edit an item listing, you’ll be able to remove the background on all product images. When you upload or select photos for your listings in the mobile app, you have options to edit the images. If you want to automatically add a white background, simply tap on the background removal feature. You also have the option to edit or apply your own touch-ups.

“At eBay, we want to make sure your products stand out from the crowd, both within the marketplace and on external search engines. Our new background editing feature on the eBay mobile app uses computer technology to make it quick and easy for you to get rid of noisy backgrounds on your product images – no need to pre-edit photos before adding to your listings.

We know that having a white background on your images can help to improve your listing visibility on and off eBay, as Google search only indexes images on white backgrounds.”

We know that this is a feature that sellers will love – for years many Tamebay readers have been turning to external tool providers to remove the background from their images and to add a plain white background. Whilst this is an exclusive tool for eBay, it wouldn’t surprise us if people started listing new inventory first on eBay simply to get clean white background images which they can then use on their own website or other venues they sell on.

eBay will be gradually introducing this feature on mobile devices throughout February and March on eBay apps. Make sure you have the latest version of the eBay app installed (5.39 or newer for iOS and 5.40 or newer for Android) and keep an eye on your eBay app for when you can start editing photos to add a white background on your new and revised listings.

  1. All my product shots are taken against a white background – perhaps fortuitously without any awareness of Google indexing, yet reading the above wonder if the same weighting will be given to my photos Vs. those that have been edited around such as is described above in the code to give a white space ?

To make sure you stand out from the crowd?? but offer it to everyone… so when everyone uses… you won’t stand out…

This isn’t event he case… its so eBay can improve search by image.. no other reason.

Google only Indexes images on white? Well that’s a blatant lie. thousands of companies images are indexed not on white backgrounds..

millions & millions of images without white are indexed..

my website images are grey for a start & they are all indexed all 10000 of them.

  3. where is the sense in making this feature mobile-only?
i really cannot see the logic in it.
and as Paul points out, why the need to straight up lie?
are ebay just incapable of doing a good thing without spoiling it somehow?
