Zalando will be introducing a “Pre-Owned” category in Germany this fall. This is a huge milestone for the fashion and lifestyle platform as they commit themselves to catering to customers who want to shop pre-owned articles and those who wish to give their items a new life through selling.
Buying and selling pre-owned clothing helps in the overall reduction of waste and ties into the modern clutter free lifestyle. The increased demand for sustainable fashion is interesting especially considering the pressure it puts on merchants when consumers are less keen on paying extra for sustainability. Selling used clothing is one way sellers can reduce waste in the fashion industry and consumers can feel good about doing their part for the health of the planet.
“customers are increasingly in search of pre-owned items whether for reasons of sustainability or to enrich their looks with a unique piece. On the other hand, decluttering is now part of the fashion conversation, and customers are in search of innovative ways to do so.”
– Anne Pascual, SVP Product Design, Zalando
The new category means that Zalando customers can now browse the pre-owned category for unique and used items. When sellers list items on the site a quality check will take place and once passed, used clothing will become available for customers to buy. Zalando also want to make browsing pre-owned items as easy as any other category bringing the pleasure of buying fashion online to pre-owned clothing, making it feel like a normal process.
“What’s so special about the pre-owned category is that customers will experience the same convenience proposition as they would shopping any other category on the store. This is what we want to bring to the pre-owned fashion landscape: an easy and pleasurable way of shopping, great convenience and, yeap, the 100 day free returns Zalando customers have been enjoying since we began.”
– Torben Hansen, VP Recommerce, Zalando

Good for them, but they could also increase the choice of men shoes on offer as currently it’s all sneakers and nothing else pretty much.
Having previously ordered shoes from Zalando it would happen to receive “used” items which quite frankly went back in same day. Now ordered directly from Geox (from Italy warehouse… 😉 and received used shoes again so went back with it. I order brand new shoes so I should receive such. I hope the brands realise people buy from a brand for reason(s).
