Many companies have faced challenges during the Coronavirus pandemic, and so has Amazon. However the difference is Amazon struggled with an explosion in business and whilst they’re pouring millions into additional costs, their business has expanded dramatically and Amazon have never been scared to double down and invest in growth at the expense of profit. Now the news is out that they’re so busy they’re adding another 12 planes to add to Amazon Air freight capacity.
With a fleet of 70 cargo aircraft, another which entered service in May and 11 or order for 2021, Amazon Air may well be the only airline expanding their fleet during the pandemic. The new planes will be 12 Boeing 767-300 converted cargo aircraft from Air Transport Services Group (ATSG).
It’s worth noting that just a year ago Amazon Air freight capacity was increased with the addition of 15 planes announced in June 2019. Only launched in three years prior, Amazon’s investment hasn’t faltered and as their business grows so will their fleet.
The planes have been used for everything from transporting essential PPE supplies for Amazon associates, frontline health workers and relief organizations as well as maintaining capacity for regular cargo operations to ensure customers continue to receive the items they need.

Amazon will exit the Coronavirus Pandemic with Amazon Air freight capacity increased by 17%. That’s not a bad result for future operations with every expectation that online retail will continue to attract consumers as an alternative to the high street. The cost of leasing and operating planes is astronomical but the only way Amazon can rapidly move products around the US in order to fufil next-day or two-day delivery.
