Amazon India have announced that they have achieved their goal of eliminating all single use plastic in packaging across their fulfillment centers by June 2020.

Amazon India have worked hard to remove all single use plastic and reach their sustainability goals in their fulfilment network through various collaborations and pilot programs. Some of the steps that the company have taken in reaching their goal include removing any plastic packaging material, introducing 100% plastic-free and biodegradable paper tape and replacing thin cling films used for customer deliveries. According to Amazon, any plastic packaging materials still in use throughout their fulfillment centers are 100% recyclable through available collection, segregation and recycling channels.

“The elimination of single-use plastic in our packaging across our fulfilment centers marks an important milestone in our relentless journey towards building a sustainable supply chain. Our aim is to minimize environmental impact while elevating customer experience. While navigating through unprecedented challenges with the lockdown and pandemic in the last few months, we have continued to take progressive steps towards ensuring that we meet our commitment. We strongly believe that moving towards sustainable practices is good for the planet, the customers and the business, and we will continue to invest and innovate on this front.”
– Prakash Kumar Dutta, Director, Customer Fulfilment & Supply Chain, Amazon India

Packaging-free shipping

Something that Amazon have been trialing in India is Packaging-Free Shipping (PFS) All parcels coming from Amazon India’s Fulfilment centers are now either packaging-free or have significantly reduced packaging. Sending parcels without packaging is a huge way to reduce waste but what happens when products require more protection and padding and can sellers be sure their stock won’t be damaged in transit?
