Zalando have added a new feature to its platform that will help close the gap between new and pre-owned clothing. Zalando is now allowing customers in Germany and Spain to trade in lightly worn items of clothing, helping meet the huge demand for convenient sustainable fashion.
Earlier this year Zalando introduced the pre-owned category on their platform to help in the overall reduction of waste. Sellers could list and sell used clothing providing they pass the quality check. Convenience has always been important to Zalando and the new category made browsing pre-owned items easy for consumers making it feel like a normal, pleasurable process.
“Interest in pre-owned fashion is high and growing, especially among millennials. At the same time, customers are missing an easy and reliable service that combines it all: effortless trading in of items they no longer wish to wear, and an enjoyable online shopping experience for pre-owned fashion. With the launch of Pre-owned, Zalando is the first fashion platform to offer such a seamless solution and tackle these customer needs at scale”
– Torben Hansen, VP Recommerce, Zalando
Since then second hand fashion has continued to grow and consumers can now trade in their used clothing via free-shipping in exchange for Zalando gift card credit or a charity donation. Zalando are helping their customers help the planet and are currently accepting clothing from a number of brands both on and off the platform. This not only supports sustainability but could also help bring new customers and help retain existing customers.
“Millions of customers are already visiting Zalando every day to find personalized inspiration, advice and entertainment. Zalando Pre-owned is one of our key initiatives to further elevate the customer experience on our platform”
– Robert Gentz, co-founder and co-CEO, Zalando
