Cyber Month spectacular but muted growth on Cyber Monday

No primary category set

The nation has gone bad spending billions over Cyber Month (formerly known as November), so it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise that growth in order volumes on Cyber Monday was muted, showing only a 1% increase in sales volume for compared to Cyber Monday last year.

While Black Friday sales volume increased 22%, Cyber Monday hardly followed that trend and did not significantly surpass 2019 according to data sourced directly from Enterprise ecomm automation company Linnworks’ proprietary platform.

During the weekends leading up to Black Friday/Cyber Monday, data shows a 50%-60% YoY increase in online shopping. While Black Friday itself had a 22% increase — Cyber Monday fell drastically short of the increase trend seen throughout the rest of Cyber Month.

Linnworks Cyber Month year on year & increase

Speculators might put this down to multiple factors including the drastically increased spend over the previous month and the fact that today on Tuesday the 2nd of December, England comes out of lockdown and many shoppers will be hitting the high street…

….although the is changing forever with a Debenhams fire sale as the retailer founded in 1813 goes bust, the entire Arcadia group (Burton, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, Evans, Outfit, TopMan, Wallis and Top Shop) in administration, BHS went pop a couple of years back, and Peacocks and Jaeger are also in administration. For those pent up shoppers willing to risk a throng in the shops it might be the last time their high street is worth visiting before much more of it is boarded up and empty.

Seeing mammoth year on year growth in order volumes is no surprise in a pandemic, what will be really interesting is to compare Cyber Month next year in 2021 when whatever is left of the high street is open again. 2021 will be a strong indicator of how much change is permanent – Will we see numbers flat in 2021 compared to 2020, drop back slightly, or growth which means the way we shop has changed forever. Come back next year to find out.
