Based in Germany, Jesse is a bit of an expert in German marketplaces and today shares everything you need to know to decide that selling on Hood.de is right for your business.

Hood.de

Well, that’s it. Brexit is finally behind us and British retailers can begin to look at longer-term international expansion plans without worrying about it all being for nothing in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Where better to focus your expansion efforts than to Europe’s ecommerce powerhouse, Germany?

Hood.de is an interesting German marketplace. Interesting in the sense that despite going from strength to strength over the years, it often flies under the radar from the international perspective of “which marketplaces should I sell on when expanding to the largest European ecommerce market?”. It’s to be expected really. Competing for your attention in the same space as the likes of OTTO, Zalando, About You, Real, etc., the German market really offers a number of attractive expansion options beyond Amazon & eBay; so where does Hood.de fit in?

According to SimilarWeb, Hood.de is the top-ranking site for the category Ecommerce And Shopping > Auctions in Germany (October 2020). That’s no small achievement, as evidenced by their >12 million customers.

In 2017, Hood.de was acquired by one of Germany’s largest retail chains, Karstadt, before their own merger with their main competitor Galeria Kaufhof. These two also offer a major marketplace of their own at Galeria.de.

Hood has a lot of the benefits of a marketplace such as Wish, without as much competition from low-priced Chinese sellers. Hood supports a range of listing enhancement options such as multi-variation listings, support for zoom on large photos, discount/sale price options etc. In addition to this, Hood listings often place really well on Google Shopping and other search engines and they even have their own Alexa skill!

Finally, the important bit. What does it cost to sell there?

Hood took its name from our British protagonist, Robin. Their focus is to make it easy for sellers to offer good value to consumers and this is reflected in their selling fees. With selling fees between 3-8% (category dependent) and a competitive monthly fee of €21-39 depending on your shop settings, and how many products you want to list.

How to get started

Assuming you have already translated your listings for Amazon, eBay or another German marketplace, you can easily convert these to match the requirements for Hood using eCommeleon.
