Japanese ecommerce company Rakuten have recently announced a partnership with Uber Eats Japan, giving customers the ability to use Rakuten’s payment service to order food and groceries. The services will intergrate by the end of April.

Rakuten offering incentives for using their payment services to pay for orders on Uber Eats Japan is a clever business strategy. It is unlikely that online shopping will take a dramatic fall, but companies will still want to focus on customer retention as we start to see more normality post-pandemic. Just like online marketplaces, food delivery services have grown in popularity over the last few years and bringing the two together can help strengthen the glue that keeps consumers coming back.

By using Rakuten Pay with Uber Eats, consumers will earn points that they can spend on Rakuten orders. For every 100 Yen spent, users will earn 1 Rakuten point. Points can only be earn’t when paying with Rakuten Card, Rakuten Points or Rakuten Cash. The partnership also means that users can use their Rakuten ID to log into an existing Uber Eats account or register very easily using their ID.

Both companies are also launching campaigns to get consumers excited about the collaboration, including a special sale events on Rakuten Ichiba, Rakuten’s online marketplace, as well as ID and payment integration on Uber, the mobility service operated by Uber Japan. Users can expect more seamless and convenient collaborative services going forward.
