Tesco marketplace relaunches today!

Tesco Marketplace has launched today, or strictly speaking relaunched as they closed their last marketplace iteration back in 2018. Today however, the marketplace is back with around 9,000 products listed in categories varying from home and garden to pets, toys and DIY.

Some of the UK’s best marketplace retailers are already selling on the Tesco Marketplace, including Trojan, Charles Bentley, Online Home Shop, Rinkit, and MH Star.

You’ll be able to shop Tesco marketplace items on both Tesco.com and on the Tesco app, although you’ll have to checkout and pay separately to your normal shopping you’ll still qualify for Clubcard points on your marketplace purchases.

Marketplace items will incur delivery charges and will ship directly from the marketplace seller. A delivery charge of up to £3 applies for Marketplace orders under £50 (£6 for Express Delivery). Big or heavy Marketplace products need specialist delivery and a delivery charge of up to £10 will apply for standard specialist delivery. However good news if you are an Anytime Delivery Saver customer (or if you spend over £50 from one seller) as than you’ll get free delivery.

This is perhaps some of the most exciting news of 2024 for marketplace retailers – Tesco as the UK’s biggest supermarket are so ingrained with the great British public that just about everyone shops at Tesco. We know that back in 2017/2018, retailers selling on the old Tesco marketplace reported it as one of their biggest sales channels with many sourcing stock in volume specifically to sell on Tesco.

Not wanting to nitpick on the day of launch, but there are a few marketplace offers displaying that are currently out of stock. Hopefully Tesco will hide these in the future.

The idea behind the marketplace is to bring new products to Tesco – products that you might think that they sell but in reality they don’t. Vastly increased selection is the name of the game and the 9,000 products at launch is a drop in the ocean compared to around 90,000 product lines that Tesco sell. But as Tesco add new sellers this will grow fast and we have every expectation that there will soon be more products offered by third party sellers than Tesco stock themselves.

Tesco is pretty much a closed marketplace with sellers carefully curated for product assortment and service. They’ll be growing relatively slowly, but this is Tesco so in terms of other retailers the growth will be explosive.
