Brits consider boxing-up unwanted gifts to make extra cash post Christmas

Post-Christmas, people across the nation are feeling the pinch, with new research from eBay UK revealing that over half (57%) of UK adults say they’d like to make extra cash in January, rising to a huge 82% amongst Gen Z.

Following a busy festive period, people are looking to recoup their funds and boost their bank balances in the new year, with 1 in 5 saying they’d like to make an additional £400-£500.

Post-Christmas is the perfect time to list on eBay, and we see popular gifts listed on eBay as early as Boxing Day. People are always on the hunt for bargain deals in the January period, meaning there’s a buyer on eBay just waiting to snap up your items and help you make extra cash for the new year. Plus, with no fees to pay for private sellers on eBay, it’s a win-win.

– Kirsty Keoghan, GM of Fashion, eBay

With only 18% of people surveyed saying they love every gift they receive at Christmas, and two thirds (66%) admitting they’re unlikely to use their gifts, it’s clear that many will be underwhelmed with what they unwrap this year.

Nearly 7 in 10 (68%) UK adults admit to having given away or sold a gift they thought they would never use, with men more likely than women to re-gift or sell an item within a week of receiving it.

With buying pre-loved continuing to rise in popularity it’s perhaps no surprise that 48% of people would be happy to receive a pre-loved item – after all someone’s unwanted gift could be just the item another person wants to get their hands on.
